The real questions people have before getting into this — answered straight, no recruiting spin.
Yes — every path here is commission-based. There are a few ways to do it: buy your own leads and keep a bigger slice of your commission, work free leads and split commission 50/50, or work leads handed off from other agents on straight commission. None of them are a flat paycheck job — you're always building something real. We'll walk you through which one fits where you're at.
You'll work as an independent contractor (1099), not an employee. That means more control over your schedule and how you work, but you're responsible for your own taxes — most agents set aside money for quarterly estimated payments.
No — this is full-time, in-office, 9-5 Monday through Friday. Breaks and lunch are allowed and pretty lenient, but they're not meant to be taken advantage of, especially if you're on Path C — the free-lead agents are counting on you to close. If you're paying for your own leads, the pace is a little less intense, but you're still expected in the office every weekday, same hours.
Depends a lot on which path you're on and how consistent you are. All three paths are commission-driven, so income swings — first-year is usually the leanest, and it builds as renewals and referrals kick in. Path C's handed-off leads can mean steadier volume early on, but it's still commission, not a guarantee.
There's a real lag — you have to be licensed, appointed with a carrier, write a policy, and then wait for the carrier to process and pay it. That can run anywhere from a few weeks to over a month after your first sale, so it helps to have a little runway going in.
No. Most people who do well here didn't come from sales or finance backgrounds — they came from all kinds of places. What matters more is being willing to pick up the phone consistently and follow the process.
You can retake it — it's $44 per attempt through Pearson VUE. Most people who don't pass the first time do on the second.
Depends which path you're on. Path A: you pay for your own leads and keep more of your commission. Path B: leads are free, but you split commission 50/50. Path C: straight commission — you're not sourcing leads at all, you're catching handoffs from other agents. Which one makes sense depends on how you want to trade cost for control.
